Book Giveaway A Success!

BONUS FREE BOOKS FOR EVERY STUDENT
December 12 was a BOGO day (no purchase necessary) for Shanklin students when Friends of Shanklin popped open cartons of books. It’s always a hectic month for teachers and students before winter break with little time for yet another activity squeezed into the school day so volunteers toted books, separated by grade, and wheeled them on carts around the halls to each classroom.
About 400 students from Pre-K to Grade 5 lined up and were surprised to chose, not one but TWO, books to keep. Our own Pat Stover had special dual-language books at all grade levels as well as popular graphic novels, classic favorites and requests from teachers.
The FOS Book Giveaway grew from FOS volunteers watching a purchase-only annual Scholastic Book Fair when so many kids paged through books then handed them back because they had no money. Now each student knows the pride of choosing, owning and being responsible for their own book, many for the first time . . . . thanks to generous folks in Habersham and support from St. Marks Episcopal Church and the Junior Service League of Beaufort!

Positively Impacting Shanklin Students

....And With Your Help, We Can Do So Much More!
In 2024, SC Department of Education scorecards showed JS Shanklin Elementary School rose two ranking levels over the past 2-3 years. This is a tremendous improvement and as Principal Elizabeth Rivera stated was "... a true team effort from everyone at our school - teachers, staff, students, families, and community members.”

Several signature programs at JS Shanklin are making this result possible and are supported by Friends of Shanklin donations and volunteers:
-
Emerging Scholars after-school program
-
Special learning tools for math
-
Volunteers helping in the classrooms and after school to tutor reading and math
-
Experience trips that expose students to the world beyond Burton while reinforcing what they are learning at school
-
Annual book giveaways providing free books to students to encourage reading

Our programs are having a positive impact on the students' academic life and understanding of the world.

Your generous donations have provided much needed funding for our efforts. Your investment of your time and talents by volunteering to work with students is helping students not only improve their academic performance but also gain mentors who model the importance of learning.
